ABOUT THE SOUNDTRACK

Helen Stanley is a highly-respected Bristol-based composer and musician, who has performed with well-known local bands such as Mo Funk, Cache and Pressplay. Knowing one of her idols was the Hollywood composer John Williams, when I was nearing completion of Falling Sky I asked her if she would be interested in producing a soundtrack for the book. It's something I've seen done a few times, but that I personally never thought worked. Either the comic would say "Play track 3 now" (which is very distracting if you're in the middle of a story) or the soundtrack might give indications when to turn the page. I didn't want to do any of that - I wanted you to be able to listen to the soundtrack simply as a background score without having to turn the pages at specific moments, but at the same time for the score to work well as a piece of music on its own.

And so Helen set about working out melodies on her piano. I was shocked when I heard them - they really were hauntingly beautiful, and beyond anything I had expected. And over the next few months, Helen set about using all her contacts in the Bristol music scene to rope in some of the best musicians around to record pieces. (To give an example, the saxaphone solo on track two was completely improvised, and done in one take.) The soundtrack was finally completed the day before the Bristol Comics Expo 2007.
